We recently played a texas hold em poker tournament. In the middle of the game, one of the players had to leave for an emergency. The player picked another player who was no longer in the game to take over his seat (chips included). Many players objected saying this was illegal in a true poker tournament. Question is….does WSOP or any legitimate poker tournaments outlaw/allow player substitutions? Thanks in advance.

No, this is not acceptable. Just like if someone has to leave, it is not acceptable to give the chips to another person to let them take over. Instead, they have to even distribute the chips to the table or give back to the dealer.

    It is never acceptable.

In any ‘real’ tournament, the best thing that would happen is the chips remain in play. Blinds and antes are posted from the stack until the stack is eliminated. If the stack survives until the money, they still get paid.

But I’ve never heard of any kind of tournament where an alternative could be used.

Its not allowed. What will happen is the stack remains at the table, and at the seat. Blinds and antes are posted from that stack, and it is dealt cards, but is assumed to immediately fold every hand (including big blinds).

The stack (and therefore the player) remains until the stack runs out or the player returns. A player can (and does) leave the table for any reason, an emergency, dinner or just to hit the can (cmon, nobody in the WSOP sits at the table for the full 12 hours a day).

The stack does get paid if it finishes in the money though.
