How can I tell that I am ready to play Texas Holdem for real money?

texas holdem

I don’t wanna be the fish at the table everyone is making money off of.

I’ve tried some online games with play chips and here’s my results.
On pogo, in a 4 player table, I finish first 35% of the time.
On Full Tilt poker 90 player tournaments, I make the bubble about 15-20% of the time.

I have little knowledge of pot odds however…

you’ll just have to play. It’s pretty easy in this day and age to find poker tables that have a 2/4 table. If you can ride out $100 for a few hours without getting crushed, then you can play live poker. If you can actually have a few winning days, then maybe your ready for a 5/10 table. Live play, once the stakes are raised, MUCH different than tournament poker.

I play a lot of play-chip tables, as well as live cash games & tournaments, and one thing I can tell you for sure, that people play much looser with play-chips. Consider this: How many times have you had a big bet called on the flop by a guy chasing a straight or a flush? It happens a lot, doesn’t it? You get called by someone with pot odds against him, they get lucky, and win “your” pot… This wont happen so much for real money. You’ll find it far easier to protect your hand with a good bet, and fold your opponents.

At the same time, you’ll have to tighten up your own game, as fewer people will be throwing chips at the pot “just because…..”
In short, I don’t think you’ll really know until you start playing real money tables. Better study up on pot odds though….

Good luck out there! –Unless you’re playing me ;-)

I’ve never played for play money at Full Tilt, but if you can consistently make money at the highest buy-in play money sit and goes, you’re probably ready to go to the lowest buy in real money sit and goes.
